The most common appliance symptoms in Colorado Springs homes, what usually causes them, what you can check yourself, and when to call a technician.
When an appliance stops working correctly, the symptoms are almost always obvious before the cause is. The refrigerator is warm. The washer finishes a cycle but the clothes are still soaking wet. The dishwasher runs for two hours and the dishes come out dirty. These are the calls Blue Fix Appliance Repair Colorado Springs receives every day.
This guide covers the most common appliance problems across every major appliance category, what typically causes each symptom, what you can check yourself before calling a technician, and when the fault is beyond a DIY fix. Colorado Springs-specific factors (altitude, hard water, dry air) are noted where they are relevant to the diagnosis.
Refrigerator Not Cooling
One of the most stressful appliance faults because it risks food spoilage quickly.
Check first. Confirm the temperature setting is correct and has not been accidentally changed. Check that nothing inside the refrigerator is blocking the air vents at the rear wall of the main compartment. Blocked vents are a surprisingly common cause of uneven cooling or a warm refrigerator that is still running. Check that the refrigerator door seals are closing cleanly with no visible gaps or tears. A seal that does not close fully allows cold air to escape continuously.
Likely causes when checks are clear. A faulty evaporator fan motor prevents cold air from circulating through the compartments even when the compressor is running. A defrost system failure causes ice to build up on the evaporator coils, which progressively blocks airflow until the refrigerator can no longer cool. A failed thermostat or temperature sensor sends the wrong reading to the control board. A compressor that has degraded significantly will also cause warming, though this is less common on units under 12 years old.
Colorado Springs factor. Condenser coils on the bottom or back of the refrigerator collect dust faster in Colorado Springs due to dry, high-desert air. Heavily clogged condensers cause the compressor to work harder and the refrigerator to run warmer. If your refrigerator is gradually getting warmer over weeks or months, condenser coil cleaning may resolve the symptom before any component has failed.
When to call. If the checks above reveal nothing obvious and the refrigerator is not cooling after two to three hours with doors kept closed, schedule a diagnostic visit. Defrost system repairs and fan motor replacements are affordable and return a refrigerator to full function quickly. See our Refrigerator Repair page.
Washer Not Draining or Leaving Clothes Soaking Wet
Check first. On a front-load washer, locate the drain filter access panel at the lower front of the machine. Place a towel and a shallow dish below the cap before opening it. There will be residual water. Remove and clean the filter. This is the most common cause of drainage failure on LG, Samsung, and Bosch front-loaders in Colorado Springs and can be cleared without any tools. Check that the drain hose behind the washer is not kinked.
Likely causes when checks are clear. A failed drain pump motor cannot move water out of the tub at the required rate, even with a clean filter. A blocked pump impeller, a small object like a coin or a sock that made it past the filter, can stop the pump from turning. A control board fault can prevent the machine from entering the drain cycle even though the pump is functional.
Colorado Springs factor. Hard water mineral deposits on the inlet valve screens can cause fill faults that show up as the machine appearing to cycle but not advancing correctly, which can be confused with a drain issue. See our Hard Water and Appliances Guide.
When to call. If filter cleaning and hose checking did not resolve the drainage problem, the pump or its wiring needs a technician. See our Washer Repair page.
Dryer Not Heating or Taking Too Long to Dry
Check first. Clean the lint trap thoroughly. A packed lint trap restricts airflow dramatically. Check the external vent termination at the outside of the house to confirm it is not blocked by lint, debris, or a damaged flap that is not opening fully. Colorado Springs’s dry, dusty air can pack a dryer vent faster than in more humid climates. Reset the circuit breaker if the dryer runs but produces no heat. Some electric dryers draw from two legs of a 240V circuit, and a partial breaker trip can power the drum motor but cut the heating element.
Likely causes when checks are clear. On an electric dryer, a failed heating element is the most common cause of no heat. A blown thermal fuse, a one-time safety device that cuts heating when the dryer overheats, is the next most common. On a gas dryer, a failed igniter or a faulty gas valve coil prevents the burner from lighting. A cycling thermostat that has failed open will prevent the heating element from activating.
Colorado Springs factor. Gas dryer igniter performance at 6,035 feet deserves specific attention. An igniter that is weakening may glow visually but not draw the current needed to open the gas valve at altitude. This is a common service finding in Colorado Springs that does not show up on a standard sea-level igniter test. See our High Altitude Appliance Guide.
When to call. After checking the lint trap and external vent, if the dryer still runs cold, a technician should test the heating element, thermal fuse, and igniter. See our Dryer Repair page.
Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes
Check first. Remove and inspect the spray arms, the rotating plastic arms above and below the dish racks. The small jets in the arms should be open and unobstructed. Use a toothpick to clear any visible blockages. Remove and clean the filter at the bottom of the interior tub. Check that the wash cycle selected includes a heated wash. Quick or eco cycles on many dishwashers do not heat water and will not clean heavily soiled dishes effectively.
Likely causes when checks are clear. A failed wash pump motor reduces water pressure throughout the interior, resulting in poor spray coverage and dishes that are rinsed but not cleaned. A faulty water inlet valve may allow an insufficient fill level for a proper wash. A heating element failure means the water never reaches the temperature needed to dissolve grease effectively.
Colorado Springs factor. White residue on dishes and cloudy glassware is nearly always a hard water mineral issue, not a cleaning failure. The dishwasher is rinsing at the correct temperature but the mineral content in the water is depositing on surfaces as it dries. Rinse aid and monthly descaling cycles address this without any repair. See our Hard Water and Appliances Guide.
When to call. If spray arms are clean, the filter is clean, and the correct cycle is selected but dishes still come out with food residue, the wash pump or water inlet valve needs assessment. See our Dishwasher Repair page.
Oven Not Heating or Heating Unevenly
Check first. For a gas oven, confirm the igniter is clicking when the oven is turned to bake. If there is no clicking at all, there may be a control board or igniter wiring issue rather than a failed igniter itself. For an electric oven, check whether the bake element at the bottom of the oven interior glows red when the oven is heating. If the element is visibly broken, cracked, or shows a burn mark, it has failed and requires replacement. Check the oven temperature with an independent oven thermometer. An oven that heats but is consistently 30 to 50 degrees off is a calibration issue, not a component failure.
Likely causes when checks are clear. On a gas oven, a failed igniter is the single most common cause of no heat. A bake element failure is the equivalent on an electric oven. A failed temperature sensor sends incorrect data to the control board, causing the oven to either underheat or overheat. A control board failure is less common but can affect any of these functions.
Colorado Springs factor. Gas oven igniters at 6,035 feet require a slightly higher current draw than at sea level to reliably open the gas valve. An igniter that glows but takes multiple attempts to light the oven may be performing marginally: adequate at sea level, insufficient at Colorado Springs altitude. Our Oven Repair and Range Repair technicians test against altitude-appropriate specifications.
When to call. If the oven is not heating and an element check or reset did not resolve it, a technician should test the igniter, temperature sensor, and bake element.

Stove Burners Not Lighting
Check first. For gas burners, remove the burner caps and grates and wipe clean any food debris or grease around the igniter ports. A clogged port prevents gas from reaching the spark point even when the igniter is functioning. After cleaning, dry thoroughly and test again. For electric coil burners, try swapping the non-working coil with a working coil of the same size from another position. If the replacement coil works in the problem position, the original coil has failed.
Likely causes when checks are clear. A cracked or contaminated spark igniter electrode on a gas burner. A faulty infinite switch behind the knob on an electric coil cooktop. This switch controls the heat level and failure causes a burner to produce no heat or only high heat. A failed surface element control board on glass-top electric ranges.
Colorado Springs factor. Gas burner flame quality matters here. Yellow or orange flames indicate a rich combustion condition from altitude misadjustment. A burner that lights but burns yellow is not the same problem as a burner that will not light at all. See our Stove Repair page for both types of gas burner faults.
When to call. If cleaning the burner ports does not resolve gas ignition failure, the igniter electrode or the spark module requires a technician.
Ice Maker Stopped Producing Ice
Check first. Confirm the ice maker arm or shutoff switch is in the down or on position. Check that the freezer temperature is at or below 0°F. Ice maker production slows significantly above 10°F and stops above 15°F. Replace the refrigerator water filter if it has not been changed in six months or more.
Likely causes when checks are clear. A scale-clogged water inlet valve, extremely common in Colorado Springs hard water homes, restricts water flow to the ice maker until production stops entirely. A failed ice maker module no longer goes through its cycle of filling, freezing, and ejecting ice. A clogged water supply line reduces flow below what the solenoid can pull through.
When to call. If the filter is fresh, the arm is in position, and the freezer temperature is correct but the ice maker has not produced ice in 24 hours, a technician should diagnose whether the fault is the inlet valve, the water supply line, or the ice maker module itself. See our Ice Maker Repair page.
Garbage Disposal Not Working
Check first. Press the reset button on the bottom of the disposal. It is a small red or black button that pops out when the disposal overheats or jams and trips the internal thermal overload. If the reset button is out, press it firmly until you feel or hear it click. If the disposal hums but does not turn, it is jammed. Insert the hex wrench (usually supplied with the disposal) into the hex socket on the bottom of the unit and work it back and forth to free the grinding plate.
Likely causes when checks are clear. If the reset button trips again immediately after pressing, the motor is overheating for a reason beyond a simple jam. If no humming sound is present at all, the switch or the wiring to the disposal may have failed. A leak from the bottom of the disposal typically indicates a failed internal seal, which usually means the unit is due for replacement rather than repair.
When to call. If resetting and unjamming did not resolve the fault, or if the disposal is leaking, see our Garbage Disposal Repair page.
Microwave Not Heating
Check first. Test that the door is fully latched. Microwaves will run (turntable spinning, light on) but produce no heat if the door interlock switches do not confirm the door is closed. Open the door fully and close it again firmly.
Likely causes when checks are clear. A failed high-voltage diode, capacitor, or magnetron on a microwave that is otherwise powering on but not heating. These are high-voltage components that should not be inspected or replaced without proper discharge procedures. See our Microwave Repair page for over-the-range and built-in units.
